LEGISLATIVE UPDATE

Happy New Year!

The 2013 legislative session began on Monday, January 14th. There are a large number of new legislators and some notable changes in leadership this year. House Speaker Andy Tobin remains in his position, but the new Senate President is Andy Biggs. The Arizona Catholic Conference (ACC) congratulates both men on their achievements and looks forward to a good year ahead.

We are also proud that Bishop Thomas Olmsted of the Diocese of Phoenix was selected to provide the opening prayer on the first day of the session. In his prayer, Bishop Olmsted prayed for religious freedom and that the human dignity of all is upheld.

The start of the legislative session also means that the Red Mass is right around the corner. As a reminder, everyone is invited to join Bishop Olmsted and Bishop Nevares along with our elected officials, judges, lawyers and other public servants on January 22nd at St. Mary’s Basilica at 5:30 p.m.   The Most Reverend William Francis Murphy from the Diocese of Rockville Centre, New York will be the homilist for this special Mass.

Earlier that day the Arizona Life Coalition will also hold a pro-life rally commemorating the 40th Anniversary of Roe v. Wade.   The rally will be held from noon to 1:00 p.m. at the U.S. District Court Building located at 401 West Washington Street in Phoenix. All are invited to attend.
