Legislative Update (03/27/20)
School Choice Legislation Signed into Law!
We are grateful that Governor Doug Ducey has recently signed a positive school choice bill (SB 1224) into law!
This law will help several Navajo families continue to receive ESA scholarships to send their children to a school they attend just over the border in New Mexico. SB 1224 also contains important administrative reforms to make the administration of the ESA program better for all recipients.
While this bill made it to the Governor, many bills are now stuck after the Legislature temporarily adjourned its session for a couple of weeks due to the COVID-19 health emergency. Before doing so, however, the Legislature approved a basic budget that includes $100,000 in funding to support Maggie’s Place and homeless pregnant women.
Also included in the budget was an additional $50 million appropriation for help during the current crisis. Food banks and nonprofit organizations serving the homeless are amongst those eligible to receive this funding.
This is an extremely unusual time for everyone. As important public policy developments occur, however, we will keep you informed.
